Electric BBQ Grills
Safe and versatile, the electric bbq grill offers a smoke-free grilling option. Electric
bbq grills are a favorite among persons living in apartments, condos, or other rental style homes where open flames
are not permitted. One benefit of electric bbq grills is the smokeless grilling experience they create. Because of
this, electric bbq grills can be used indoors or outdoors.
Typically, the cooking surface of the indoor/outdoor units is usually ceramic or porcelain and has ridges evenly
spaced apart on both the upper and lower cooking plates. You place your raw foods on the bottom plate and lower the
top plate so it rests on the food. This unique cooking style cooks both sides of the food evenly without the need
to turn or flip. Juices and grease drip into the grooves created by the ridges and flow into a drip pan that is
easy to clean.
Outdoor units cook similar to a propane bbq, but without the use of gas. Instead, these units rely on electric
power to heat electric elements (similar to those found in your electric oven). Your food sits on a traditional
cooking grill surface and the lid retains heat within the unit.
Other benefits of the electric bbq grill include its portability. It can be taken and used in any location where
electric power is available with little to no mess.
While electric bbq grills have the benefit of even cooking and indoor cooking, they will not create the char or
the heady smoke flavor similar to charcoal, propane, or natural gas bbq grills. Nor do they have the versatility to
grill, roast, and smoke foods.
Electric bbq grills come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Additionally, grills can be purchased for
indoor/outdoor use or strictly for outdoor use. Outdoor use grills usually have more cooking area available and
have shelves, drawers, and side tables to hold utensils. Many manufacturers make stands for the smaller portable
grills to rest on while cooking. This allows the user to maintain the flexibility of a portable unit but enjoy a
more traditional grilling style.
The George Foreman Grill was the first successful electric grill on the market and is still a leader in
indoor/outdoor electric bbq grills. Other manufacturers include Weber, Dimplex, MECO, and Char-Broil to name a
few.
