Reviews for Oklahoma Joe's Anthem Series Longhorn Reverse Flow Offset Charcoal Smoker

Feb 8, 2022

ONE OF THE BEST REVERSE FLOW SMOKERS

This is by far one of the best reverse flow smokers you can get on the market for the money. The reverse flow baffle plate works really well and keeps the temperatures even across both sides of the chamber. The cooking chamber has a generous amount of space that should suit most people's cooking needs. All of the food that I've cooked on this smoker has had the most incredible bark and flavor. I also notice the reverse flow tends to cook a little quicker than a regular offset smoker and I hardly encounter any stalling in my cooks. I would not recommend using the chamber for grilling/searing. Overall this is the best smoker I've purchased from Oklahoma Joe's and it is worth every penny.

WOW!

I have historically failed at smoking turkeys in my previous smoker. Through the holidays with the OKJ Long Horn Reverse Flow, I nailed every thing I cooked ranging from TriTip, chicken lollipops, ribs & turkey. Best purchase by far.

I USE THESE COMMERCIALLY

Bought my first one 2 years ago and now have 3. I run around 500 pounds of pork butt, 200 pounds of chicken, and 100-150 pounds of beef through them per week April through November with about triple that amount in Mid June through July. They are build rugged and take the abuse of traveling 300-350 miles per week in the trailer. Only complaint I would have is the flow/circulation could be better. Have no problems keeping it or keeping cooler as the different situations require. Only 4 stars for performance due to the airflow. These travel while the 3 year old $15,000 pro model sits in the barn.

AWESOME SMOKER

I have had My Longhorn Reverse now for just shy of a Year. I Smoke Often. This Beauty was Very Easy to Tame. Hold's 250 with Ease for the Duration of Most of My Smoke's without Refueling. The Smoke is Consistent without having to Rotate the Meat. For Those that have Not tried to Smoke on a Reverse Flow Smoker, You are Certainly Missing Out. I am So Happy I went with the Longhorn as it Provides Plenty of Cooking Space for All that I Desire. I Highly Recommend to All that Share the Same Passion as I. You Need This!

BEST SMOKER THAT I'VE OWNED!

Ordered this longhorn reverse smoker because I owned a highland offset years ago but decided to go with a pellet smoker. Biggest mistake ever! Gave the highland to my son which he loves,by the way! And gave the pellet smoker away free! Just didn't give the smoke flavor that I wanted in my briskets. Now I have the longhorn reverse made my first brisket on it and it was the best brisket that I have ever cooked! It was so good there was none left! I will be a continuing costumer of oklahoma joes smokers.

GETS THE JOB DONE!

I've had this smoker for one season now (4 climate location) and it performs beautifully. I've never had an issue coming up to temp or holding it. It was easy to put together and there are tons of after market parts that'll make your smoking experience more fluid. However, right out the box this thing is built for backyard parties and hosting. I'm a beginner and this was a great cooker for me.

VERY PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE

Purcahsed 10 months ago. No problem maintaining 220-260 degrees with initial charcoal to start then hardwoods. Baffle trays help divert heat throughout. If any improvement make the charcoal wood basket in heavier gauge.

THIS IS GREAT

I recently bought the big boy reverse flow offset smoker and am already pleased. I own a very similar (not reverse flow) offset smoker that I have used for 25 years. I wanted a smoker for our second home on the Chesapeake Bay and had been looking at various manufacturers and models to include Traeger smokers and other electric smokers. After all the review work, I decided I just wanted to burn wood and smoke meat. I did not need wifi to check the temp while I'm out on the dock or at the grocery store. I did not need electricity, temp probe, or a wood chip auger. All I wanted was wood fire, smoke, and meat....and if I wanted to .......500 degrees to roast oysters!!! (not happening with a Traeger) Assembly was easy though a second person would have been helpful. This is a heavy duty smoker. The wheels must weigh close to 5 pounds each. After assembly, I followed the directions for seasoning the inside. This is a must do!! After two Boston Butts, a few whole chickens, and some nice smoked blue fish.....I could not be more pleased than "a bird with a French fry" . I am equally impressed the temp gauge and with how well the dampers and fire box allows me to keep the temp at a smoking level vs bbq vs grilling. Overall, very pleased. Of course these will rust....but buy a cover for those who complain. If you are a guy who just likes the experience of burning wood, adjusting dampers, and smoking meat....this is the smoker/grill for you!!!

BEST VALUE SMOKER ON THE MARKET

Bought our Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker a year ago after a lot of research. This is easily the best offset smoker for the money. There are better smokers, but you will pay 3 - 10 times more for them. This is not a tightly sealed smoker as it comes out of the box. I purchased the gaskets and high temperature caulk and used them during assembly and am extremely pleased with the results. You can google Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn modifications and find kits and videos to do this. I bought the door clamps but didn't install them and after a year, I don't think they are necessary. It seals tight enough to maintain temperature over a long period of time and is easily regulated with the smoke stack and firebox dampers. However, you can't shut it down tight when finished to save all of the remaining charcoal which doesn't bother me a bit given the reasonable price. The paint will burn off in the hot spots and those spots will rust. Just expect it, it's going to happen. I plan to paint those spots at the end of the season with a high temperature black paint. This is a fairly large smoker which is what we needed for the size groups we serve at the farm. The Highland Reverse flow smoker is a little smaller and may be more appropriate for backyard applications. Bottom line, if you need an offset smoker and it's big enough, take a hard look at the Longhorn. This is a well built, well designed smoker for the money that with a few modifications will serve you well. We are cooking 50 pounds of beef a day, two days a week and getting ready to purchase a second one as we expand.

LONGHORN REVERSE SMOKER

I've smoked 3 times since getting it a month ago. So far, so good. I did take the advice of several other reviewers and make the modifications (high temp caulking, add'l temp gauge, door latches, & primary door gasket,) Without these, it would be a different smoker. After assembling, the primary door was a bit wonky with a gap of about 1/4" at its widest. That's a lot of heat & smoke loss. Door latches fix that asap. Definitely cover the baffles with aluminum foil to make clean up much easier. Drippings will bake on otherwise and it's like cleaning an oven after years of neglect. Also, purchase the baby drip bucket to avoid a mess all over the ground around the smoker. (OK Joes' should just include this and price it into the smoker) It definitely runs warmer up top versus at the rack/meat level so I may be adding temp gauges at meat level for more precision as another reviewer suggest. I've been able to control temp and the smoking process very well, including on a windy day. Seems to be built well and assembled in about 30 minutes. Another 30-45 for the modifications, but worth it if you want this smoker to perform really well. I'm very happy and look forward to all the smoking in my future! Definitely a great purchase and will be worth your investment!

GREAT SMOKER FOR THE MONEY

I've had this now for a month and am very pleased. I had the longhorn combo unit before but now am building a new house with an outdoor kitchen. I decided I wanted a larger smoker and a separate grill for convenience. I've used this smoker twice since I bought it, once for a brisket, and once for prime rib, and got great results both times. I did some modifications when I assembled is, welded the legs to the barrel, used high temp both to assemble and install the firebox, etc. Am quite happy. To do a beter unit you'd have to pay 3 or 4 times the price.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

Hey folks. I've read a bunch of the reviews on this site as well as others. I did my research, watched various YouTube videos and still decided to by this. It's my first one and I'm glad I did my research. I'm super happy with this! When I smoke meat, I babysit the fire and enjoy my day with a cold brew. This isn't a fire-and-forget pellet smoker. It involves work. You want quality food? Do your homework and learn how to use this tool. Sure, some paint may peel because of the heat but just spray some vegetable oil on those parts (like a cast iron pan) to prevent rust. Parts warped? No, you just didn't follow the instructions or watch an unboxing video. The ONLY recommendations I could give to Oklahoma Joe's is to brace the firebox better so it doesn't sag and provide a drain bucket. Otherwise, take care of your equipment, learn it, use it the RIGHT way, and you'll be pleased with the results.

4 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING ;-}

I put oil on the fire box after using it to keep rust of, no rust on my pit. I sealed it up and there is on leaks and did some other updates to make the way I need it for me. I can run 225* for over 3 hour not a problem, all way run it in Reverse Flow. I do a lot of low and slow cooking. I love this Pit, the best one I have had.

LONGHORN REVERSE FLOW OFFSET SMOKER

I received my smoker last Friday and ran my first meal though it for a Memorial Day party with family and friends. Always nervous having my first meal off of a new piece of equipment in front of friends and family. We smoked ka-bobs of all types. The temperature was even and the outcome was great - I am looking forward to many more meals off of this smoker. Excellent product.

BIG, BIG SMOKER!

Just cooked a brisket on it over the weekend. Came out just fine. Quality materials, easy installation. A definite upgrade over my last offset. Plenty of room now to cook. I read the dimensions when I purchased but didn't realize just how big this thing really is. I could have easily fit 3 more briskets (16 pounders) on this with what I cooked.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE UNIT!

I purchased this beast about a year ago, and I've never been happier! If you're in the market for a medium-large offset, but you're not sure about this whole "Reverse flow" deal, I say go for it! I love reverse flow, but you can easily switch it to a regular offset, even mid-cook if needed! To addres a few common complaints: If you're worried about the paint, just season it more. Or don't smoke at all. Realize that every single smoker in the universe is going to have paint peel after a while, That's what happens when you have a log fire of thousands of degrees. Just hit it with some spray vegetable oil to season, even mid cook on the bottom of the fire box, i.e. Mad Scientist BBQ. Yes, it's heavy and you'll have to pay freight charges same with any big smoker. This unit holds temp fantastic, and if you hit it with some lavalock gaskets on the doors and firebox halves, grab a 2nd thermometer, drip bucket and cover from OK joes, you'l be the object of jealousy of your neighbors!

- Macgyverman1123

Feb 8, 2022

BIG UNIT

This is a monster. As described, almost 2 months in, seasoned well, no paint blistering. holds temp well. It does take more fuel but that's due to the size of the box and cooking chamber. maintains temp well. More clean up than standard flow barrels buts its worth it it. very happy with this purchase.

Feb 8, 2022

GREAT FOR THE PRICE!

I've had the Highlander a couple of years as my first offset. Excellent results cooking on it, but it wasn't big enough. I had been eyeing the Longhorn Reverse Flow for some time. Glad I got it! Even temp's across the cooking area (except for a couple of inches on each end. Understandable.) Excellent smoke flavor, being in Texas all I use is Mesquite. The charcoal basket is a plus, use the charcoal for heat and the mesquite for flavor. Maintains heat very well, I tend to get the smoker too hot on this one. Only bad thing is the paint blisters off of the fire box, but that was to be expected. A spray can of canola oil, and it is seasoned!
I need to put some fire seal around the lid. There are more expensive smokers out there, for the price, this is a good choice.

LOVE THE SMOKER

I love this smoker. Only complaint is one of the grill grates had a defective section. Also after the first use, the paint peeled off the fire box and I didn't get the smoker chamber above 325deg. So not sure why. I will repaint it. Wish I could get a new grate, but I don't want to pay for shipping cost.

Feb 8, 2022

GREAT SMOKER

This was easy to put together, if you have another person which it states in the instructions. But for the cost of this it should have come with a few accessories..such as grease drip bucket and gasket seal kit. When I unboxed it my charcoal box was broken at the solder points in the corner. Other than that Awsome!

- JR950

Feb 8, 2022

GREAT SMOKER

I followed the instructions to the letter for seasoning. paint still peeled off. After that it was an awesome smoker! held temperature consistently and turned out one of my better briskets. I recommend covering the pans under the grate with foil to make clean up easier, just punch holes in it to match the pan.

Feb 8, 2022

GREAT SETUP

I purchased this 2 months ago. Works great as a grill however haven't been able to dial it in for smoking yet. I believe the thermometer may be defective because I have smoked a rack of ribs at 225 for 12 hrs and a brisket at 225 for 16 hrs and both were very rare inside.

ONE OF THE BEST COMBO SMOKER GRILL

Feb 8, 2022

VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY OF THIS SMIKEE

I bought this less than a month ago. Had difficulty assembling it because mounting surfaces were warped and holes were not correctly aligned. Did burn in and the seasoned it. Used it for the first time yesterday to smoke a brisket and a pork butt. Did not hold temperatures well at all, constantly adjust air flow to keep the temp even close. After about 2 hours I noticed that the paint was burning off the fire box, at 4 hours the interior paint started melting and was like a rubber. Also noticed several spots on the cook and smoke chambers where the welds were not completed. This is the second smoker I have purchased from them, unfortunately it was no where as good as the previous one.

- Chucky

Feb 8, 2022

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT BUT I LIKE IT

Smoker came without seal between the halves of the fire box or from there to the smoke chamber. Tow of the pieces were damaged prior to shipping I dined the smoker where they couldn't have gotten damaged in shipping. Told customer service all they seemed to care about was me registering it then they said they were sending the parts but only sent one.

- Somewhat Happy

Feb 8, 2022

IT COULD BE BETTER

I have used my smoker 4 times and after all the modifications made to it. To get it to seal up. The paint has already came off the hot box. And I have not let the smoke chamber get over 275. So 499 and have to repaint already.
